So much work? I assume you mean the originals, the metallurgy of the time was playing catch-up with the technology. Jet engines and their heat tended to melt, warp, distort, and wear out critical engine parts somewhat rapidly. That and Germany's manufacturing base was under a bit of stress from above. Needed raw materials were running short, good workers in shorter supply (slave laborers were known to risk their lives to build defects into the war machines they were forced to build). Many factors.

Without getting into specifics the idea is to have a "turnkey" airplane that is safe and reliable. Sanders is completing the task admirably and we will have a great piece of equipment once it is completed to thier satisfaction.

The Me 262 is still at Sanders in Ione. There were some major issues that needed to be addressed before sending the aircraft on a 7 day a week tour. Most of those issues have been addressed, they are working on the last couple (which were the biggest and most time consuming).

The new CJ-610's have been put on the aircraft along with new engine mounts. The entire airplane has been rewired. The cockpits have also been stripped and completely redone. Tango-Tango has many of the same problems as White 1 you just do not hear abou them because the aircraft is in Germany. Many of the issues that Sanders have found have also been an issue on Tango-Tango. They do not have to worry about some of the smaller issues because they do not plan on flying the aircraft on a schedule as busy as The Wings of Freedom Tour.

There has been a lot more work done to the aircraft than we originally intended, but the aircraft will be ready for many years on the circuit once it is complete. We do not have a completion date yet, but we are hoping to have it on The Wings of Freedom Tour in 2010 when we start up in January.

Just because there is not a step by step update on a daily basis like Gary did with Ol 927 does not mean that anything is muted. Have you called the Collings Foundation office, or stopped by The Wings of Freedom Tour stops to get an update? Those are the two best places to get updates because we do not post all of our day to day activity on a public forum. There is just not enough time in our day to do that.

We are aware that the Me 262 is not on the website yet. The plans for the formal announcement of the Me 262 being added to The Collings Foundation fleet have changed multiple times. Part of that is because of internal plans with the tour, and part of it because of the aircraft donor and his family. When I get the ok to add it to the website, it will go up that day. I suspect that will not be until the formal announcement about the aircraft is made (whatever those plans end up being).

Sasnak - as for fielding those kind of calls, we do it all day for lots of people. We do not give out any deep details, but we would be more than happy to give you what we know as far as rollout date (something we do not even know for sure yet).

Fouga23 - That is not something that I am at liberty to discuss on a public forum. There are members of this board that were heavily involved in the construction of the Me 262 projects, and I do not feel that pointing out the issues with the aircraft is fair on a public forum.

The German example does not seem to have seen air under its wings very much either. And it seems that the next example off the line is being completed as a static-only example in an attempt to offload it to a museum. Read into that what you will.................

I saw the CF ME-262 yesterday. Ken's update pretty much sums it up. It looks great, but there's still a lot to be done.
