Older aircraft at Edwards AFB ???

i was looking on http://wikimapia.org/ at edwards AFB and noticed some older aircraft. next to a big 36 in a circle on the dry lake run ways at the end of a ramp is a B-52 an A-!0 a F-102 delta dagger and a F-104 starfighter an F-15 and a F-4.....then due south of those on the former muroc army airfield is some various planes one what looks like a Global Hawk UAV but there is a F-111 aardvark. where did these older planes come from and are they airworthy. or could they be slated for targets [oh i hope not] anyone know the story on these older planes??????

Don't know, other than maybe a photo range, I know that 'SNOOPY' a B-58 with an extended nose sat in that area (maybe still does) for years. When I click on the posted link, I get the local (Western Washington) map and expect the TV weather guy to walk into the scene and show me where the rain and wind are coming from -------

No idea why they were parked there but I don't think that is a B-52. Compare it to the one on the NASA ramp to the north or the one parked in front of the hangar just to the west. The wings and tail are different. Looks more like a KC-135 or a 707.

I don't see the F-4. The F-102 is an F-106, and that B-52 is some version of the KC-135/707series of aircraft. Interesting. Maybe they are slated for teh museum and are just waiting to be moved all on the same day?

What you are seeing is the South base. You will also see the Air borne Laser 747 nose and the Heavy test squadron. On a good day you will see B-2 and B-1 bombers. That parking area is just an extension of the museum. The A-10 is the two seater. There is an old fire fighter A-26 and a few test frames. The C-141A that you see has an F-16 nose on it I believe (can't remember for sure) for testing.

The planes that were at the Circle 36 were referbed and were waiting for the museum to finish building their new parking spots. That is all.

I lived at Edwards 2000-2004 and I am also writing a book on who were the names the streets were named after.

It is a wonderful place to live if you love aviation and history. Not the best for the wife and kids.

Herc130 is correct about it being a storage yard for the Museum. They have a second one up the road from NASA (with the Prowler).

The two seat A-10 has been restored and moved to the museum complex (At least it was there a couple of weeks ago when I drove by). When I was stationed at Edwards (1991-1995) the two seat A-10 sat across from our ramp.

The Museum asl built an extension outside of the west gate (Rosamond Bl), and has all of the centruy series fighter there along with a 1950's tower.

I also understand that there are some aircraft south of main base on a photo recon rout. Most were scheduled to be pulled back to base for the museum, but I do not know if it ever happened.

If I had seen this post before I drove by S. Base today, I would have stopped and gotten some pics for you. I may have time to go out after Reno and get a couple of pics.

Glad to hear this news...as to the A-26, there was a red one in the OMS hangar there in 1966 when I first got there. It had some Eastern college name on the side of it, but I cannot recall it now.
We had one F-106B, a TF-102, about a dozen f-104s, 3 F-4C's, 4 B-57's, the two old B-52's, one B-58 (chase for the B-70), about 10 T-38's, the same number of T-33's and a pair of T-37's as well as 2 or 3 XC-142's. These VTO aircraft were out at the North end of Contractor Row towards North Base.
At the time that I was there 66-69, South Base was only used for barrier tests and other limited flight activity.
I do not remember an F-101, but there was an F-100 at South Base for awhile.

The same organization operated the turbine Convair with the extended nose that was used as an airborne simulator, and IIRC also the T-33 with the F-94A/B nose.

I believe both of those are in the NMUSAF.
