awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww shucks! I so wanted the Gary Pony! Do I at least get a ride for noticing the missing rearview mirror?!

Why did they take it off? The original HJGB had one.

Are all the kill/mission markings the same?

(Winner gets Gary's pony.)

Could it be the back side of the propeller tips are now painted black instead of yellow?

Aww..right, its a stumper.
When Bud hopped in the cockpit of HJGB in Reno last year, he commented on the K-14 gunsight. He said that's the way it came from the factory, all close and right in your face. He said his crew notched the glare shield to move it forward a few inches. Sooo.....Mike & crew did the same. Now the K-14 is not so jammed in your face.
(I forget what Mike said, if later K-14s came from the factory in the forward position? If the entire squadron eventually moved their K-14s forward? I forget these points.)
Gary gets to keep his pony.........aahhhhh!!

Thank you Mike for sharing the photos, Dave for taking the photos, and everyone involved in staging it! Quite the impressive 'skyscape' to back up such fine examples of the P-51D.

Vlado, thank you for answering that question you posted - I have been keen to find out just what you were describing. ;) I believe one of the best photographic examples that illustrates this modification is this famous shot of Don Blakeslee:

I forgot if HJGB is so adorned, but yellow warning tips on the rear of each blade would be a correct detail. Not saying some rear sides of WWII operational blades were immune to fading/wear or repainting all black during phase maintenance by the prop guys, but look in any WWII Mustang book - zillions of photos of yellow warning tips on the front and back ...

Hi Mike, those are some great photos and thanks for the tour of your shop today, you are doing some amazing stuff. Got Paul back to UES in the T-34, sure would be fun to upgrade to one of your 51's.

Carl

Here is a pic of the "modification" we did this summer. It sure helps out being able to see the panel and not hitting your head anytime you bend over in the cockpit...
