The rebuilt ex-crashed Shuttleworth airframe....ex "Vendetta"....ex Cavalier-owned airframe...which is as close to the actual provenance of Robin Olds' aircraft as you are going to get.

Does anyone know what "Scat" meant to Robin? Why did he call his planes that?

It was his West Point roommate's nickname, apparently.

As he told it to me, his roomie had not made it to (or through) military pilot training, and so he promised to take his good friend's name, at least, into aerial combat even if his friend wouldn't make it himself.

He also said he just liked the sound of it.

No telling how true the story is, but that's what he told me in a fighter squadron over a plastic cup of beer one night in 2003.

Wish I had been there, too. Thanks, Randy.

Scat is also a kind of jazz singing, as well as one of those odd (i.e. disgusting) Japanese fetishes. I am no expert on the latter of course.

At least in the South, "Scat" means "git out of here! or "Scram!" My wife's grandfather who was of the 1930's generation used to say "Scat" after sneezing like some people say Gadzundheit or " Bless You!"
Other people from that generation used the word to describe a really fast car or airplane. "That Mustang will really scat!"
