This forum is for discussions pertaining to Air Racing and Aerobatics of NON-Warbird aircraft. In addition this is the place to discuss General Aviation aircraft topics and yes Michael, that includes flying Lawnmowers

Bill did not butcher a Mustang -- the fuse was almost entirely new build, and I believe the airplane was registered as home built, not as a Mustang.
The Vendetta fuse became a Mustang again, so all worked out fine for us Mustang lovers...

Thanks for joining in, Neal.
Do you have any good pictures of Miss Ashley II rounding the pylons? That would be a good angle to show everyone the wing.

I was referring to Gary's 3350 comment when I said butcher a Mustang.

I don't think a race conversion really "butchers" a Mustang anyway. IMHO Dago, Strega etc. have as much or more historical value as racers than as stockers.

If you are going to butcher a Mustang like that at least use a 4360.
Why??? I like the power to weight ratio on the 3350 better, plus it's just a better engine all around. There's a reason that very few airplanes used the 4360 in comparison to the dirty-three-filthy.
3350-26WD, 2800-3000 hp, 3500 pounds +/-
4360-20WD, 3500 hp, 4600 pounds +/-
Yeah, but a 3350 Mustang would be ugly, a 4360 Mustang would be UGLY. Might as well go all the way.

Oh, I dunno........round engine Mustangs might have a future...................

Not butchered......it was a new build fuselage just for this project.

After Vendetta crashed, Bill Rogers took those wings and tail and created Miss Ashley II for Gary Levitz.
Forgot all about that......thanks for the reminder.
Miss Ashley II was a great lookin' airplane in my opinion. It was a Gold racer, but wasn't just mind-blowing fast. It probably would've done better with a different firewall forward.......you know, like a good ol' 3350!

Great shot Neal. I had never noticed the strakes on the rear of the fuse before.

Wow! Both are very good shots Neal. Thanks for posting. I sure do miss seeing you and Birgetta.

It's your own fault, LOL. All you gotta do is come to Reno after all!
Seriously, though, you are and will be missed by us...
Take care of yourself, my friend

Looks like a T-6 wing planform to me!
Tsunami started out with a NACA scoop carb inlet on the top like that, but it lost a few inches of manifold pressure in the turns. We speed taped some balsa wood wedges to it to try to induce the flow into the scoop, but it didn't really help. The following year it had a protruding scoop that went all the way to the spinner.

Looks like an Antonov 2 radial engine and prop stuck on the front

There was also talk years ago , the late 80's when Burt Rutan was King (and the aviation journos was trying to convince us all that flying disposable bic razor blades like the Longeze was cool) of a composite unlimited racer with twin Nissan racing engines .
Did that thing ever fly ?
EDIT
Found it on google
The POND RACER .. didn't have much of a wing !
It would have been interesting to see some more projects like this chasing the Mustangs, Bearcats, Sea Furies (albeit on steriods). All I can say is that they pretty well got propellor engined designs very right nearly 65 years ago , wow that's a long time
