Folks:

I was wondering why the Russians don't get their transports and helos in standard catwgory with the FAA in the USA? Wouldn't it be beneficial to their economy to sell something Americans can use?

Or is there some kind of industrial complex going on where the US Gov is in cahootz with American companies preventing Russian planes to be flown commercially?

They tried this with the An-2; unfortunately Cessna has better lobbyists.

Well then so did everyone in Europe too....

The problem is that the Russian Certification Standards don't match either US or European (JAA) standards and because of that, there is no "direct" transfer. Until companies like Antonov and Tupolev decide to certificate the aircraft in compliance with FAR or JAR standards, then they will be limited in their operations within the US.

However, one must also remember that there are not a small number of Russian aircraft operating commerically within the US. Until recently there was a handful of An-12's operated by US companies and several companies like Polet Flight, Antonov Design Bureau, Atlant-Soyuz, and Volga-Dnper operate An-124 and Il-76 aircraft into, out of, and within the United States.

The hypocrisy here is interesting. The US Military will not sell C-141's to private firms, and has the planes scrapped instead. Then they let a private contractor bring in a Russian plane to refuel military planes.

And I'll bet the IL-76 contract is cheaper than the 777 refueler fiasco.
