Pensacola with SBD pics

Nice pics Dave. Interesting how they restored most of the SBD, but for part of the horizontal stab.

I believe that in that panel, you can see all paintchips from all the different schemes it wore. It was originally NMF with yellow wings, then blue with stripped rudder, then over painted stripes at Midway. The Rudders being overpainted like that is 100% correct. You were able to see the pre-war stripes fading through like that on this aircraft.

They also left part of the leading edge of the left wing unrestored, to show a bit of the original "yellow wing" scheme.

As for the new recoveries, who will be doing the restoration work? Will they be restored in the shop at P-cola, an outside contractor, or restored by the museums they're going to?

It's great to see all these SBDs being saved, but I'd like to see some of the other types in the lake pulled up as well..like the F6Fs and Corsair.

SPOT ON gentlemen! The restorations are by volunteers
supervised by NNAM staff and vols with ENORMOUS experience.
I was there both today and yesterday. It is AMAZING to see
the enthuiasm of the "Nintendo generation" active duty volunteers.


I watched as people worked on the Coronado, the Lockheed
L-10, and THREE SBDs. Other projects such as repainting tail
hooks and so on were underway. VERY humbling to watch.......


NASP has their shi.. together and is supported by the crew
in D.C. I am honored to be able to observe their progress and
participate at a low level........

Hey all, thought I would fill you in on the recent addition you have been chating about. It is BUNO 2179 raised from Lake Michigan on June 19th by A&T Recovery, after it's restoration is complete it will be going to Ford Island Pacific Aviation Museum in Hawaii. The story behind 2179 is that it ditched due to carburetor icing. There are pictures of the recovery but I need a site to upload them to, the pictures are courtesy of Mr Bill Marquardt, President of the Glenview Hanger One Foundation.

If someone can give me a host site to upload to I'd love to share them.[/url]

Thanks for the tip about Photo bucket I forgot about them as far as the BUNO is concerned there must be a mistake on what was pass to me. I see that the article in the Honolulu avertiser states it's 2173.

They will be bringing up another one this year for the Glenview Hangar One Foundation.

I passed up a personal invite for the raising of 2173, shame on me but I'm not going to miss the next one.

The Coronado is finally going through the restoration shop... HOOORAY!!!!!




I remember seeing that massive beast out in the yard when I was a volunteer there (1990-1994), and always hoped they'd get it cleaned up. Looks like her day has finally arrived... that's fantastic!

Lots of acreage on the Coronado, wouldn't want to think of the rivet count! I didn't know one of those birds still existed. Very cool!! NEW THREAD, more pics please!!
