Would that be today's typical flight or one of Jimmy Stewart's typical flights ?

One of Stewart's, one takeoff and one landing, with Alaska in between !

So how many thousands of gallons an hour would she burn during a typical flight?

I just looked through the book and the maximum appears to be just over 2000 pounds per hour with an average somewhere around 800 pounds per hour. So without doing the math exactly that sounds like about 135 gallons per hour on average. Depending of course on all the usual factors.

I suspect that is a per engine figure for the recips. So at 135 gal/engine/hr x 6 engines = ~ 800 GPH plus whatever the 4 jets burn.

You're right, I forgot to write per engine. The jets are about 2500 lbs per hour each at 70% power or around 416 gph each. Of course they are only used as needed so on any individual flight their impact on fuel use is smaller than that would indicate.

So that all comes out to 2464 GPH, or there abouts.

That would be a pretty cool sight to see but I believe there is only one engine left for the plane the rest of the props are hung un a dummy shaft. I asked what happened to the other engines in another thread but nobody ever replied.

Heck...that's just $5,500 an hour in fuel costs...what does the F-4 burn?

The other engines were seized by the Air Force after engine run-ups in the 70s.

Chris, we forgive you most of the time. But those boys from Ft Worth, who did all of the work might come lookin' for you. I don't think anyone from Dallas had that much to do with the B36 ! :D
