Warbird Information Exchange

Due to the generosity of a CWH member, the Canadian Warplane Heritage was able to acquire a Yale located in Michigan. CWH Lysander pilot Rick Rickards ferried the Yale back to its' new home at Hamilton Airport late last week.

Way cool! Is the museum going to install landing gear fairings on her? That gives the Yale a really distinctive look.

Where in Michigan was the plane located? Could this be the Yale mentioned in the current "Barn Find" thread?

No, this Yale has been around awhile. I remember seeing it back in the '90s at the Wings of Eagles airshows.

Somebody needs to get the CWH to do an air-to-air of both of their Yales flying formation. They'd look great in the matching markings.

how many Yales does that make it for the CWH?

This Yale was owned by Ray Mudge of Brighton, Michigan since about 1993, registered as N129DB. After he passed away, it was put up for sale on eBay. Before '93, it was with the Indiana Museum of Military History.


For sure! AFAIK, 3350 (CF-CWZ) hasn't flown in quite some time, so maybe not in the immediate future.. Hopefully when we get our Yale (3399 - C-GLJH) in the air this summer, we'll have a Gathering of Yales in Tillsonburg. We're thinking of inviting all the airworthy Yales in the area, including Jim Mattice's 3372 and Dave Carlaw's 3445. Heck, even Eric Downing could come up in 3406 if he wanted to make the trip!


This would make three on display, after 3350 and 3411 hanging over the gift shop.

The new Yale at CWH looks great.

along the back wall of my hanger is a completely restored Yale centre section ( fuselage not wing) with canopies and all installed.
It is part of a restoration project that the owner has sort of lost interest in. I think there is a complete a/c but the rest is stored somewhere else.
We ( The Tigerboys) are storing it for this guy but in the 4 yrs it's been in my hanger, I have never even met him. The a/c is all tarped up and just sits there. No idea of the RCAF # but it is an Ernie Simmons Yale like most of the survivors.
It's a shame...somebody should try to aquire this one.

3411 hanging in the gift shop is a movie veteran. It was in the film captains of the clouds with James Cagney.

FYI the Yale hanging in the CWH gift shop is a former Tigerboys airframe that was traded to CWH for some of their surplus inventory.
They have one more complete Yale at their hanger a nd there is the one mentioned above in the back of my hanger.
All together there are quite a few still around.

As you know I love all vintage a/c but am partial to biplanes, so the old Yale in my hanger just doesn't have enough wings for me....now if it was a Spit or Hurricane... I might change my mind

Hopefully someone will come along and aquire this airframe.

CHAA's 3399 and CWH's 3400 are in it too. You can make it out a lot better if you have the DVD. (3399 has a large 'X2' and 3400 has 'X3')
