Ahhh, good catch. Most folks don't realize it on the first go around, that after alllllll of that testing of a new "extraordinary" wing design, that he ended up using the components from a Cessna 180 or 182, including the engine, wings, and I think even the rudders were Cessna.

Watching The Defender is kind of like looking at one of those 3D pictures that is hidden amongst a bunch of red, purple, and blue dots......the more you look at it, the more you see (although, I must admit, I never can see what's in those dang 3D pictures). :-)

Gary

I think they were the 152 wings that you see earlier....you know, the ones attached to the 152.

Here is another one of Diemart's former aircraft (I'm pretty sure based on the 8 seat description) that is currently under restoration in Utah.

ummm.............yes

Late last year I had a Flight Test Data Operator that I hired out of Canada here to do some flight test work with us and run our data system in one of the jets.

I kept telling him about "The Defender" and he had not heard of it. So one night we had him over for some grilled steaks and after dinner we watched the movie.

He loved it!

Didn't the P-51 have a plywood bench for a rear seat and 2 ropes you tied together for the seat belt???
I saw the Zero with the R-2600 and the F-86 drop tanks
It's at NAS P-Cola now.

Yeah, that's another one of those things that Deimert did that makes you wonder what the heck he was thinkin', and makes you marvel at his ingenuity, all at the same time. I believe that's the blue Firefly that is pictured in The Defender...about 7-10 minutes or so into the start of it.

He also made a four seat Mustang. It used a T-33 canopy and had a bench seat (I mean LITERALLY, a bench seat...maybe even an old church pew), bolted lengthwise to the belly, behind the pilot's seat. The three passengers would straddle the seat, situated one behind the other, much like one would ride on the back of a motorcycle. That must've been one heck of a ride! The Mustang historians here on WIX can probably tell you exactly which airframe that was. For some reason, I was thinking it turned into a Reno racer, or is currently flying as an all original airplane, or something like that.

did he recover the derelict P-38 shown early in The Defender? I'm also guessing there's more to the story about water in the carburator of the Zero since they're discussing metal in the oil?

HOLY CRAP!!!! That 'thing' has some of the worst sheetmetal work done outside a first semester A&P school, non existant edge margins, saw cuts instead of shaping spar caps with a shrinker/stertcher, beer can over a 2X4 wing shaping-on and on and on-including the pop riveted together, hand formed over a sheet of 3/8th inch plywood windshield framing.

I can really appreciate his 'SR-71 meets 16 ft. aluminum boat' design work, and really love his 'calibrated' bathroom scales for lift and force measurements. Still, it seemed to be a bit too far forward in it's CG don'tcha think?

I knew years ago when he first appeared in AIR PROGRESS that old Bob had more than a few washers that were less than snug.
Since I didn't see any PBS pledge breaks, I can assume this wasn't a special long version of a RED GREEN show? :o

But, as POSSUM LODGE says "Quando Omni Flunkus Moritati" 'when all else fails, play dead'.

keep your stick on the ice EH?

I heard that story too. The thing that amazes me is that the Zero flew ok, and the gear retracted. The Zero's landing gear retraction system is pretty complex, and look what else he did, he made a movie out of the whole thing that probably made him some money.
