How about the culver v...big fat nose wheel!

I'm starting to think Culver V as well, much more likely than a PQ-8 or -14:

The fuselage bulkhead shapes and cockpit dimensions appear to be pretty similar.

Might have stumbled oto the answer-Johnson 185 Sky Rocket, while cruising for something else-

The Johnson Rocket has an all steel tube fuselage that is quite complex. Just saw a restoration project a month ago picking up my Waco at Poplar Grove in Illinois
