How sadly ironic is it that if some American put up a flag pole for patriotic reasons (not to try and kill someone), some individual of questionable judgement would be "offended" and the Gov would make them take it down...

I know you said they were at the end of the runway, but in every picture, the poles are off the wingtips of the planes and not behind them.

I see what you are saying but those pics are a bit misleading.
Those shots of the a/c show them in holding position and not yet lined up for take off.
The poles are definitely at the END of the runway.
I know this because I am one of the pilots that has to avoid them.

I'm surprised someone hasn't taken a chainsaw to them

That is probably what the guy was hoping for. Then he would be the aggrieved party.

Do you really have enough knowledge of the laws up here to be making that kind of claim?

Rich,

Hey I think Tony would jump on the opportunity. Wasn't he a WW2 buff? I remember an episode where he was watching the History Channel when his son came in and he told him (in my lousy James Gandolfini accent) "This is Tarawa.....the Marines had no air cover."

The Canadian "authorities" are a joke. Can you put up mirrors to reflect sunlight into drivers' eyes to cause auto accidents too without fear of criminal penalties?

The 'families' from NJ would actually be quite happy this happened to a 'German' aircraft. Not much support there!

Otherwise they could be persuaded to make a run and a 'hit' and drag the property owner out and put these poles up where they belong!!!!

Funny that you should edit my quote! Not surprising, though.

Saying that something "is a joke" would seem to point anyone to the inevitable conclusion that this is an opinion. Had I said "they are a corrupt enterprise", that would be something else.

The fact that "the authorities" have let this idiot not only keep these obstructions up for over a year without recourse, but let him add 15' to the top of one would point me to believe that my statement reflects the self-evident.

Oh, let me guess; "I'm an officer with so-and-so division of blah-blah-blah, and I resent...". Save it, okay. Get some common sense up there with regard to this issue, huh. Before a good pilot dies because of a cretin.

What, no tributes to fallen pilots to be offended by today, August T?

I was referring to the seemingly continuous and nauseating run of stories from our propaganda department on people being offended by our symbol of freedom, such as:

The French had a solution to a similar problem with the Soviets in 1948 during the Berlin Airlift

"he French, because of a lack of transport planes, were unable to do much to support the airlift, but, in December 1948, they demonstrated they too could contribute. The new Tegel airport in Berlin, located in the French sector, was completed on Friday, November 5, almost two months ahead of schedule and test flights began immediately. Before the new airfield could become fully operational, however, something had to be done about a large 200 foot radio tower sticking up in the approach path. The tower was owned by the Soviet controlled Radio Berlin and numerous French requests to the Soviets to move it or dismantle it had been ignored.

Finally, in December when Tegel was to become fully operational and the tower still stood presenting an obvious danger to aircraft, the French attached explosives to its base and blew it down. The next day, Kotikov, the Soviet Berlin Commander, stormed into French General Jean Ganeval's headquarters protesting and threatening dire consequences for the French. Ganeval politely, but firmly, told Kotikov that the Soviets had had ample time to solve the problem, had ignored his requests, and, therefore, he had had no other alternative to insure planes and lives were not threatened.

This courageous action by the French commander won the support of his British and American colleagues and the admiration and praise of the Berliners. A few days later, the French further endeared themselves to the Berlin populace when General Pierre Koenig, the French military governor, made his private plane available to transport Christmas gifts for Berlin children. lol- I like the idea! They can send Celine Dion to serenade the man for hours, until he breaks... Like playing "Panama!" outside ol' Manuel Noriega's place during the Panama War...

I wanted to share some photos with all of you that might help clear up some of the confusion. I had my wife stop by the unpaved road leading to the poles today on our way out of town and snapped some photos. The first one is the road leading to the poles. The big pole is on the right, then the road, which is about 7 foot wide, then the end of the runway. The lighter colored grass at the left of the photo is the runway end.

Image

Here is the end of the runway from the unpaved road. No more than 20 ft. from runway end to road.

Image

Here is the location of the two poles at the property across the unpaved road. Again, the road is about 7 ft. wide, then the poles sit back about 15 ft. from the road.

Image

This is a close-up of the pole that was hit. You can see how it bent over, which I am sure helped save this historic one of a kind aircraft!

Image

I truly hope this situation is resolved in favor of the Rusells. This was my 4th time at the show, and I enjoy it so much every time. This American citizen has made many great Canadian friends at the shows each year. I even learned how to give directions to the nearest Timmy's! I hope these few photos help until someone can post a better and more complete record.
