Hi Karpis,
Sorry...I can't answer. The last time I saw them was Saturday evening. I was at home today 35 miles southeast of Mount Comfort.

What aircraft are out there with high wing, t-tail and four old style jet engines?

I saw something today which looked and sounded exactly like a C-141. Too narrow for a C-5, and too long for a C-17. Are there any C-141's still in service in specialized rolls (NASA, Wright-Pat.) or are they all done.

This aircraft was in the pattern for Dulles, but I only saw it from directly below. The engines sounded just like the very early 70's era high bypass types... unusual these days. Russian perhaps?

Cheers,
Richard

Based on your description, I'm going to guess you saw an Il-76. The Algerians used to have one come in once a year to pick up cargo from Denver right about this time of year (one year it was an annual supply of teargas) and it usually stopped somewhere on the east coast to clear customs.

(1) AT-6 type (looked like Cavanaugh Flight Museum's example)

(2) four F-16s, eastbound at low altitude in two flights of two, and all four jets appeared to have had drop tanks on all four wing hardpoints. Jet noise = the sound of Freedom! 8)

(3) radial-engined fighter type, sounded like a BIG radial, dark color, looked like a Hellcat, but was pretty far away to get a decent look, definitely not a Wildcat (didn't sound like an R-1820) or Corsair (wings weren't bent), and I don't think it was a Bearcat either :?

Nice day today!

Cheers,

A big Herky Bird with wing tanks flying low and slow. From his direction of travel and altitude, I'd say he was in the pattern for Easterwood airport at College Station, Tx. This while outside working on my shed. The rest of the day was an endless parade of puddle jumpers from the local airport until a real pretty and shiny yellow Cub J-3 passed over, a nice finish to the day.

A DC-3 flew low over my house about half an hour ago. It was white and grey with red trim. Anyone seen it before? I checked FlightAware and couldn't find any information on its flight...

Also saw a couple T-6s climbing over downtown yesterday. Probably David Folk and friends heading off to the Memorial Day fly-in at KYIP.

I see the C17's of our local air wing every day. It's like seeing a damned barn growling over yonder through the air--I can never get it into my head that that is for reals.

AMAZING!!!!!!! that is what i have to say about what i saw on memorial day weekend over the Mississippi River in Memphis. There was someone in a P-51 Mustang and what looked like either a Spitfire or maybe another mustang i didnt get a good look at it before it flew off. But they were doing loops and barrel rolls at an insanely low level and going at high speeds. It was so awesome , I wish i had a camera but i was on the highway when i saw them buzzing around so i stopped and watched for about an hour. There was also someone in a Spits Bi-plane i think and he was flying under a bridge then going straight up and doing loops and all sorts of insane stunts. It made my trip to Memphis alot better.

So can anyone tell me who these guys were and what exact aircraft they were flying in?

That's the ol' gang I used to fly with out of the DeWitt Spain Airport, just two miles north of downtown Memphis. That likely would've been Larry "Lumpy" Lumpkin in the Mustang and David Peeler in the Sea Fury. I'm not sure who was in the biplane, but I would imagine that Morris Ray was flying his T-6, along with several others of the Memphis bunch. Great group of folks, and darn good aviators. They sure taught me a bunch back in the day.

Very gratifying to see such an exciting post. The performance you saw was the Memphis in May Sunset Symphony Air Show. This was the third year that we did it. It is a great venue for an air show and a lot of fun to fly down on the river, between the two bridges and in front of the Sunset Symphony stage and audience. Friday's performance was a practice and the weather was perfect. Saturday was the real deal and the weather almost knocked us out. We managed to get 80% of the show in after the rain moved out of the box.

The show went like this:

"The Rocket-boys" F1 Rocket Formation demo
WWII trainer parade, PT-22, PT-17, AT-6 (times 2)
AT-6 solo aerobatic demo
T-33 (times 2) fly bys
Fighter fly bys (Hawker Sea Fury and P-51)
Sea Fury solo aerobatic demo
P-51 solo Aerobatic demo
Skip Stewart (modified Pitts S2S)

All of the airplanes in the show are local Memphis owned except the Sea Fury, P-51 and the T-33s. The Sea Fury, and one of the T-33s belong to the CAF and are based at the Memphis CAF Squadron. The P-51, Gunfighter, is also with the CAF out of the Great Plains Wing.

Yea i saw this on Friday. Looked like you guys were having fun. I was shocked that i was the only one acting like a 10 year old in a candy shop when watching. Oh and the bike cop i was talking to as well he was just as excited as me and was talking to the news helicopter that was flying above the river.
