i agree, he should serve with honor & respect. but the media does what it does best..... trashes the victim, so sorry to say it's probably a moot cause.

As a civilian, I'm inclined to let the military decide how best to establish and maintain military order and discipline.

Civilian direction was necessary to integrate the military in the '40's, bringing the services more into line with changes in society.

Check your timeline, Mike - the racial integration of the services *preceded* civilian desegregation by a couple of decades.
Military society is not civilian society. It's a different world. It's not my world (the USAF didn't want a four-eyed, flatfooted asthmatic), but I know many current and retired service personnel. I respect their judgements about what works - and what doesn't - in their world.

It's a step forward, but I hope they change the rules very soon. It started with African Americans in the AAF. They were black so they couldn't fly, right? Higher ups described them as cowardly and lacking intelligence. Then it was women. Surely women in the military can't be? Would you want a female in combat with you? Now both African Americans and women have served with distinction in the military for years and have proven they are equal. Now we have a guy that has proven himself multiple times in combat, teaches the new generation their first steps and he's threatened to be thrown out of the military because they found out he's gay? Does that make him not qualified to serve? I don't think he would've made Lt. Col if he didn't have what it takes!

Well, I've flown with him.
And I'd fly with him again.
I think that the vast majority of professional warriors I fly with don't give a rat's ass about your gender, color, or sexual orientation so long as you can be skilled and disciplined while you kill bad guys and protect good ones.
BTW, the rubber fist in the photo posted earlier in this thread is sort of a squadron in-joke. When fighter units deploy out to Las Vegas for Red Flag and the many other exercises that take place out there, they frequently spend their off time partaking in all kinds of off-the-wall partying.
One activity that is a regular fighter squadron social activity is called a 'road rally'. The road rally is basically a competitive scavenger hunt that takes place over a wide geographic area (the Las Vegas Valley, for instance) and frequently includes stops at locations or required events that are generally rather embarassing; get a female blackjack dealer's panties at the Sahara; get a photo of your squadron patch with a naked stripper, etc.
The fist was simply a required pick-up from the Adult Superstore out there during a road rally several years ago.

I have to agree. It's a vocal extreme minority who do you kiss your mother with that mouth? things up by being the sugar they are, and our military lets em get away with it out of fear that they're somehow more needed than the rest of us. I say screw the homophobes. A gay man serving is no more disruptive than a woman serving. And the same rules should apply. I have served with gay grunts, and never had a single problem from any of them. The only people who still make this an issue are people we can do without.
