Problem is that there were 6 Travel Airs and only one Waco, how are you set for Travel Airs??......

Was hoping to get out there this weekend to go gyrating, but WX doesn't look good, too windy.

We have no flyable Travel Airs around in Ohio save maybe one. We do have the LINCO Taperwing at the Waco Museum and then ATO NC719E about 50ft from my hangar...the ex-Bettie Lund, Art "Fatso" DeBolt, Gordon Bourland airplane. You just missed a great weekend here this past weekend. Had the first big fly-in of the year at our airport. Did lots of Waco flying and saw Jim Hammond.

Somebody say Powderpuff? I'm looking forward to this film.

I have this pic that looks to be from the 1930 Derby...taken at Lubbock Texas by my father.

That photo is really cool, I particularly like the guy on the horse looking at the airplanes...kinda puts things in context....

Baldeagle, do they have horses coming for the movie? :P

Hi,

What a beautiful picture! Can anybody identify the 2nd airplane (with no.2)?
I guess the first is a Waco Taperwing (Freddy Lund's?)? Are there more pictures available of that meeting?

Hans

I'm beginning to wonder if it's the Pitcairn PA5 Mailwing that was at one point Harold Pitcairn's personal plane. He had it heavily modified, and then sold it six months later. The plane still exists and is currently under restoration. I am going to see what I can find out.

The first airplane is Waco CTO NC21M, flown by Galdys O'Donnell.
http://dmairfield.com/airplanes/NC21M/index.html

I'm not sure about the second airplane. I will have to find my high res scan and see if we can figure it out.

The third airplane is an American Eagle with the name Miss Chicago painted on the side. It was flown by Jean LaRene in 1930.

I will have to find my high res scan on my computer and see what we can find on the rest.

I don't believe that photo is from the Powder Puff Derby as the airplanes are not correct. The no. 2 airplane is a Pitcairn. The no. 3 appears to be an International. If you could blow up the photo more I can tell you what the rest of them are.

When I first found this photo in my dad's stuff a couple of years ago and started researching it the conclusion I came to was the 1930 Powder Puff only because the first and third airplanes matched that event.

I would love to know more about the photo. I have a box full of 3-1/2x 4" negatives but have not been through them all. I would like to think this is not the only photo from this event but I have yet to find another one.

I'll have to take the time to search through them ....it takes time because I don't want to damage them.

Soon..
