I remember before 9/11 we used to buzz the Mall in D.C. with the E-4B all the time getting photos and stuff, even Mount Rushmore.

Hmmmm......White House flyby or Air Force flyby? Wouldn't it make a really cool Air Force recruiting poster? A nice non issue for certain news channels.

I still can't figure out who is shooting pics of who here? I dont see the second camera man on the grassy knoll. I know they probably aren't taking high quality pics from the F-16s even if they are the two seat models. The F-16 in one pic looks like it has the throwback tail mentioned here a while back. I forget what fighter group it was supposed to be from.
It seems that they notified the proper authorities (in NJ and NY) a week prior but told them not to publish it. I suppose so they could give an answer to 911 calls. Figured I am not up flying today. I always carry my camera and this woulda been a great shot from above.

Both, we took pics of our plane flying over the whitehouse and the Washington monument and they went to the JCS at teh Pentagon and to Boeing and of course the Air Force

If you read the report, it was not Air Force One, it was a 747 from the presidential group.
It is only Air Force One if the president is on board.

It was one of the two identical 747 Air Force Ones that are his primary aircraft though.....

It's a VC-25A.

Kinda like the King Air with all the doo dads hanging off it that came into my FBO. Announcing RC-12 in the pattern kinda confused all the students...he seemed to be offended every time we called it a King Air

Should this not be in the off-topic area? This topic is boring.
I mean, really, everyone is making such a deal about -25 doing a photo shoot. I think people should be more worried about other things than this.

This made the main news on BBC TV this morning, Tuesday.
You have to ask - "What were they thinking?"

Actually, you can take very high quality photos from an F-16, or any other enclosed canopy jet, with the proper planning. It's done all the time by some great photographers including WIX member, Richard Allnutt. I'm sure he could confirm that.
I'm almost sure both F-16's would've been 2 seaters and both carried photographers. You don't plan a mission like that without covering all the bases.
OOPS, I guess they forgot a few "bases" when they didn't tell anybody.
Stupid move.

It was a HUGE BONEHEAD move, which was my intitial point in posting this article.
I recognized the aircraft immediately as being one of the Air Force One's, so I knew this was not a terrorist attack, but witnessing first hand the attack's 8 years ago and in initially seeing a 747 being chased by two fighter jets down the Hudson River.., I was initially awaiting the inevitible.
You would have most likely gotten the same reaction from almost any city on the planet. So don't view this as 'paranoid' NYers! If you scream a huge airliner at 1,000 feet agl with two fighter jets on her tail.

any mayor would be jumping up and down!
Probably enough said about this link as it was 'off warbird topic' to begin with.., but the stupidity factor from 'top-down' had to be reported.
Why the 'top secret' if no one of importance was on board to begin with. Just not well thought out.
Almost a good idea!

Note to the White House:
Through the technical drawing technique of Perspective Projection by Descriptive Geometry, I can place the viewer's eye anywhere in relation to any object/objects, the final painting will look better than your photo, and I can do it for, umm, HALF of what it cost you this time in gas ... Call me.

Hey 330th-
Did the flight come over Manhattan proper, or did they come up past the Verrazano?
The nimrod staff weenie who planned this photo op needs to be whipped with the radio antenna from a 1978 Caprice. A little communication goes a long way- sounds like somebody in the chain had the right idea (saying it was for filming a movie), but clearly that information didn't come from the top, and it didn't get to the right people. New Yorkers are some of the most connected people on Earth- a news blurb in the NYT or WSJ along with a quick note on the morning news channels, and voila- no panic, no problem, no pissed off President and no frightened and pissed off New Yorkers.
