Texas soon to be Warbird Heaven??

They're the best, kinda like round engines. The lesser's are always havin' to take shots :lol:

I've been thinking (I know, fatal mistake) about whether Texas is becoming warbird heaven.

Definitely, there has been quite a redistribution of warbirds in favor of Texas in the past couple of years, with the building of the Lewis collection, relocation of the Friedkin collection, etc.

But it has turned Texas into more of a warbird vault than a warbird heaven. Sure, it's heaven if you're an insider with access. But for the ordinary buff, the planes are locked away, not on regular public display, don't get to many airshows, and don't post a schedule of the ones they are going to.

When Texas starts having airshows where 20 or 30 of these nice fighters at a time come out to play, it'll be warbird heaven. Until then, it's not really a very interesting place for the average, unconnected warbird buff to go.

CAF Airsho.......late September or early October...Midland, TX...every year. ;-)

Uhh what about... CAF (DFW, Houston, Gulf Coast, Burnet, Georgetown, Centex, San Marcos, Midland etc), LSFM, Cavanaugh, the MANY other museums... IMHO Cavanaugh and LSFM are two of the best in the world. I think you are overlooking MANY in the warbird movement in your frustration that a couple Texans keep their airplanes in their personal hangars...

NOTHING locked away about Lone Star Flight Museum. THey welcome all with open arms as long as they are willing to work. I showed up with no experience and by the time I moved out of the state I had been involved in several airshows, made numerous airshow trips IN MUSEUM airplanes, and was a Crew Chief on Thunderbird. I am not an A&P or a pilot and new no one when I first showed up (but have since made several of my closest friends there), simpley put in some hours and did whatever had to be done, regardles of how unglamorous the jobs were.

Pretty sure it is a similar deal in Midland and at Cavanaugh.

I think those days could return IF it weren't for security stuff, shark lawyers, and stupid officials in charge of things. Frankly, events like the one up in Fredericksburg back in December I think show that a lot of the owners are more interested in that kind of thing.

Of course we keep all the warbirds in DEEP South Texas, but we do bring them out every once in a while.

After the secret meeting in Boerne that is.
