If google found the right lake, it appears to be just north of Ottawa and is a highly populated recreational lake with the shores lined with dozens of cottages.

I'd assume that if there is anything left of the P-38 in the lake, that it would most likely have been found by now. As well, with its vicinity to Ottawa, I'd figure that it was cleaned up shortly after the accident occurred.

Those are just my preliminary guesses based on the lake's location and accessibility.

Cheers,

David

If it broke up in flight, all that would be left would be the landing gear and other heavy components.

Gentlemen,

The P-38 in question crashed near shore next to the summer residence or cottage of Mayor Charlotte Whitton of Ottawa. According to the Ottawa Citizen newspaper accounts, large sections of the remains were recovered for the Depatment of Transport accident investigation.
