I'm doing an illustration for a project for a history class of mine. I'll be discussing the role of Millville AAFB and Wildwood NAS during WW2. Fighter pilots from both bases would meet each other up and dogfight. For historical correctness, I'm trying to get some info.
I'd like to depict a P-47 fighting either a Corsair or F6F. Does any one have any stories, or photos? Need historical accuracy. thanks.

Similar events happened all the time over Long Island Sound, only there were 3 "enemies". Vought, Grumman and Republic!
Dogfights happened with regularity.
I don't have anything specific for S. Jersey.
Have you been in touch with the Millville AAF Museum?
They would probably have the best access to stories like that.

I did an oral history with a WASP that used to ferry P-47s
from Republic factory to the NJ docks. She confirmed that,
although forbidden, mock combat did take place between
the P-47s and F6Fs from Grumman Bethpage.
She was reluctant to talk much about it. After some en-
couragement she told me with a twinkle in her eyes, "I
waxed their ass!" I still can't imagine this gal flying a P-47.
She was less than five feet tall and ad to sit on two 'chutes.
I have no idea how she reached the rudder pedals.
