Greetings All -

Last week we had an E-2C Hawkeye spend the night at Spirit of St. Louis Airport on a cross country from NADEP at North Island back to VAW-120 at Norfolk. We don't see the E-2C much here in flyover country so it was a pleasant change of pace to photograph one in detail. The departure was made in the best Navy tradition :D

We get a lot of the E2'S fat sister (greyhound) visiting me , that is one fugly aircraft :)

Best for flat turns when doing ops :wink:

The first shot is a good one showing the new 8-blade props. I remember the 4-bladed ones, like the P3's.

Greyhounds were the most loved a/c on the boat because they brought the mail :P
Had a few flights in them including a couple cat shots and a couple landings :shock:
Hated E-2s on the boat they were so quiet at idle you couldn't hear them.
Had a newbie walk through the prop arc one night :( :(

Distinctly different sound vs. the old 4 blade fans. Sounds like a very angry swarm of bees!

Yah, one of them flew up the Hudson recently. What a weird sound it was making. The Hawkeye had a distinct sound regardless.., but now! Whew!

Speaking of walking through the props.., a pilot in the 330th told a tale of a newbie mechanic walk out from the front bomb-bay, past the fuselage and the number three engine.., the pilot cringed, awaiting the sound and the resulting spray.. But it never happened..; somehow he passed between the spinning prop and the fuselage unscathed.

When the mechanic turned around and looked at how close he came to an awful mess, he lost control of his faculties.

He also told the tale of another mechanic losing his head because the B-29's pneumatic bomb-bay doors initially had a habit of slamming shut without a safety pin.
