Yep the carrier is dragging something, most likely an early version of what they call a nixie, anti-homing torpedo transponder. Given the age of the photo, it could also be a wooden spar used for bombing practice with the blue 35 pound practice bombs.
The white line is the deck run line, used for Trackers (s-2), Tracers (E-1) and Traders (C-1).
Whales did go to the hangar bays but only on the CV-59 class and later as they had enough room.

Notice that Spads lined up near the end of it. Yes, it's a take-off line for aircraft like Spads that could launch without needing a cat-shot.

Yeah but, Dude, a lot of them have earned the right to think that way. GA pilot isn't going to land a one winged aircraft.
