I was stationed in the Army near DC in the late 90s, before they built the new facility. My wife wants to go to the DC/NYC area this summer, and my very short list of "must see" things has this in the top three!

Wow, that replica Winnie Mae looks great! The setting they have it in is very impressive. The real plane would look nice there. Thanks for posting those pictures...

Green Goggles-

Thanks for the pics! They're great! For what it's worth, I was part of the construction team that built the capitol dome a few years ago. I gave hundreds of tours to the top of that bad boy! Our company then built the Oklahoma History Center as well. The replica does look good there. Shame, though, that it's not the real deal.

Cool stuff. 8)
I haven't had the chance to visit the Oklahoma Capitol yet, but I would like to.

I took the Winnie Mae pictures about a year ago during a field trip in my Oklahoma History class.
For anyone even slightly interested, the Oklahoma History Center is a great museum and well worth the time.

I'm always in awe of U-H. Any of those airplanes sitting by itself would provide an hour of curiousity for me. When you consider how many are available for viewing it's nearly sensory overload. You blow past the P-47 ... to get to the FW-190 ... and rush on to see the P-61. Where does it end!?!

Yes, that is exactly how it was. I could have easily spent days there... but was limited to 4 hours. (Traffic and a 4 hour ride home, and a girlfriend with a cold were the deciding factors  )

I am glad that I have now seen 3/4's of the worlds P-61 population though.

I just focused my attention on the WWII warbirds due to my limited time there.

I know what you mean. I spent six hours there last summer, and could have easily spent six days! I shot over 600 pics as well, although probably 100 or more were rejects..out of focus, too dark, etc. That's the great thing about digital..shoot first, ask questions later.

I'd like to know more about that Winnie Mae replica. Who built it, when, and is it capable of flight?

APG85-

As far as I know, it is merely a fiberglass shell with a good paint job. It was designed structurally to do just what it is doing- hang from the museum's ceiling. I have a faint memory of someone saying it was built in Texas, but that's just a faint recollection. I'm sure someone else has the details. I'll see if I can find out who made it, if no one else here knows.
