Sheeee-it. That display looks very low.

Great photos though! I'd read on an online news source this airshow was in danger of being stopped because of the space shuttle launch, good to see it went ahead.

Actually I'm here for the Shuttle Launch. That has been reset so many times I lost count...... With the time difference (show ends at 5PM and Shuttle at 9PM or so) there isn't a whole lot of problems.

Shuttle is currently set for Sunday 9PM or so with Monday/Tues as a back up.

Last Shuttle Launch, shot from 3 miles away by me.

Hey Mark,

Great night shuttle shots.
The one you got with the moon is my favorite.

THREE MILES?! WTF kind of camera and lens do you have that gives you such clarity at such range? That's nothing short of freakin' amazing!!!

And yeah, the shot with the moon is poster-quality.

To shoot the Shuttle pics I posted, I used a pretty much standard combo.

Canon 1D Mark III Camera
Canon 500mm F4.0 Lens
Canon 1.4x teleconverter

I put it all on a Gitzo tripod with a Wimberly II head (which really lets you shoot things in motion, since it was designed for shooting flying birds)....

The tough part was getting inside NASA at the Vehicle Assembly Building so I was 3 miles away from the launch (only people closer was the team that closes up the Shuttle prior to launch and they were about 10' in front of me)......

Set the camera at Av mode; ISO 800, shutter at 1/640 and continious fire at 8 Frames a Sec. Shoot with RAW files. Not a lot to it.

But it took a lot of time to think about the settings for the camera, since there were some real contrasts in how the light would be. Plus I figured I'd get ONE shot at it and in 2 secs it was all over......

So I planned to shoot all I could when it was near the ground with reflections of the flames illuminating the Shuttle. Once it was in the air (1000' or so) all you could see was exhaust flames. I was right. All the good frames were within 1 Shuttle height (250') of the ground.

Really fun...... Hope to do it again on Sunday night (if they don't cancel).

Mark H

there has never been a winner in the low flight contest, only ties.
Here is one of the previous contestants, and as I have said before, there is no reason to fly that low in a airshow enviroments, the only ones that can see him are those in the front.
