Depends how many sequences you're planning on shooting, how many aircraft you plan on using, not to mention paying for the guys to fly and maintain the things....
I seem to recall (from 2001) that a Spitfire cost about $10,000 per hour to use in the making of Dark Blue World. A conversation with a well-known warbird operator around the same time gave me a conservative figure of £4,000 per flying hour for film-work, plus additional costs if there was ground filming involved.
But hey, Lucas can dig that kinda change out of his sofa!

Just to add another log to this - Rick McCallum (the producer of SW: Episodes I, II & III) was at the Gathering of Mustangs and Legends in 2007 (He had hid Dad with him, whom I believe was a B-17 pilot). There were also some folks attending him with Lucasfilm man purses (Had the Episode III logo on them), so I'm also hoping he was there in some capacity for this movie too.

I just hope they don't keep pushing the idea that the redtails won the air war over europe all by themselves while them mean old other units grabbed all the credit.
I've about seen enough Tuskegee airman "tributes". Enough is enough. There were other fighter units there too ya know.
And for the record, "they never lost a bomber" is false.

Those guys from Lucas films at the Gathering of Mustangs took about 300-400 photos of the Airman's Preservation Society ground crew display items. They spent a lot of time there taking pics and asking questions.
Very interested in the equipment and said that they would be contacting them in the future for the project.
