Restorations at the NMUSAF

The restoration page at the NMUSAF www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/exhibits/rest ... /index.asp was just updated. The C-131 has been brought into the shop to be prepared for public display. Hey Chris or Jerry, where are they going to put it when its done? Is it slated to go into the new building?

Yes, there was a double post. The site is running so slow for me today I wasnt sure if it went thru the first time. Link was fixed.

Cool! Now the link is working too!. Lot of great pics of rare stuff getting the treatment there!. The XC-99 at the bottom looks sad chopped up like that. The last time I saw her, many years ago, she was on her own feet...er...wheels! Way too many years outside though. Be good to see her get inside AND put together!

The NC-131 is going to go into the new hangar once complete. The C-82 and C-119 are also undergoing restoration.

Please pardon my ignorance if this is inaapropriate. My father used to work as a mechanic on C-119's at the Clinton County Airforce base, I am certain he would get a real kick out of helping to restore the C-119. How would one go about volunteering for such a thing? he lives in the area of the NMUSAF.

They would love to have him. Head on over to the museum front desk, and ask for Bonnie or Melanie in the Volunteer Program. Tell them that you are there to be a volunteer in the restoration shop. They will make you fill out paperwork,and a background check, adn then it is off to the shops. Should take about a week to get him set up. Tell them Chris from Pittsburgh sent him.

Hi Chris, How in the world do they physically fit 3 additional aircraft like the C-82, C-119 and the C-131 in the restoration shop with all the projects that are already in there?

Pat,

I agree with your question 100% ...My first visit to the museum in '99 while still living in NJ ... took me quite a while to figure out what was wrong with the 119 and then it finally dawned on me that the tail was not one that I had seen before.

As most of you are aware, the Musuem Boxcar made a midair recovery of a capsule in 1960 and for that reason, it will be placed with the space exhibits. As to the C-82 Packet, I have no idea.

My own two cents would be one of recognizing the 119's contribution to the Korean war ... but that's my own personal preference ...

After 6 weeks of resting my broken rib and concussion, I returned to the museum last Friday ...

Thanks ... one of the guys I volunteered on Friday come from Illinois once a month to volunteer .. he is an ex AF Fighter Pilot and a retired Commercial Airlines Caption (I think Delta).

Glad to hear you doing better man. I believe the C-82 is going to the R and D area along with the YC-125 Raider as it is an early production version. The 119 is heading to the space gallery.
