I believe that this is a film of a demonstration for the Kaiser. I suspect he is in the footage but am not sure. The Eagles Mere Air Museum has an American Flag signed by Orville Wright that was displayed at this occasion.

That footage was taken at Centocelle near Rome, first time a camera man went up in a plane. Some of it is well known but that clip shows some rare parts of the film.

update:
Went back and looked at my info...same plane, different flight. I misread my email.... The flag is signed by Orville Wright and dated Oct 15, 1910. It was displayed when the Wright Brothers flew for Kaiser Wilhelm.

Unstable beast, isn't it? That canard is moving constantly. Looks like it was unstable in pitch, and required correction all the time. No relaxing in that airplane.

I like the yaw string. Canada's Silver Dart had one just like it last week in Baddeck.

That film is fantastic !!!
You can really see the catapult system that launched the a/c. Lots of details.
On the inflight part, just before take off you can see him activate the camera which seems to be mounted just under the leading edge of the wing.
There is a real sense of excitement in that film, I felt it even here at my desk.
Would love to have had a chance to fly that a/c.

Here are some (not great) pix of the flag that is in the Eagles Mere Air Museum. As was pointed out, it does not date from the film, but is from that same time frame in Europe.

It is inscribed:

"To Helen McFadden, with my compliments, Orville Wright.

Berlin, October 15th 1909"
