My friends Bob Shifflet and Keith Vizcarra(father flew in the 345 FS) have been researching the 350 FG .
Bob had this to say about the photo.

Believe that may be Hugh Dow's comments on the back of the Nat.Archives photo. It sure looks like his handwriting and sounds like him. Some time ago I researched the airplane Ed was flying and finally learned it was 7D3 42-29300 under all that oil. Larry Embry (son of 347th crew chief Henry Embry) says his dad still insists he took these famous photos. Henry was on the line when Ed came back and snapped a bunch of pics but later discovered his camera had been stolen!
BTW, Ed had another oil bath while in the 347th. There's a grainy photo of the aftermath in the 347th book. Part of a collage on page 141. Pretty sure it is 7D1 42-27232 which was Ed's assigned bird. This one took place on Feb. 17,1945 (a little over a month after his Silver Star oily). Ed was leading a flight of 12 P-47s while escorting B-25s back from the Brenner Pass when they got jumped by Messerschmitts. Dove right through the formation and then high-tailed it. Doesn't remember how many but apparently they didn't want to fight. When a crewman on one of the B-25's called out bogies, Ed ordered "break", ditched his tanks and went full throttle with water injection to try to catch up with the last 109. Said when he did his engine backfired and blew off a cylinder! Same deal - oil everywhere. Guess they only give out one Oily Silver Star per War.
He also said that Ed King is still alive .
The 347 FS was called the Screaming Red A$$es for there unit patch which is also painted on the cowling .
There is someone with a donkey screaming? aviator on this sight and I can't remember who but would like a bigger photo's of this,if I may, to send to Bob and Keith.
Thanks
Rick
