Montana State University B-17 Question

Mon Feb 16, 2009 10:27 pm

Hi All,

I was watching a show tonight called "Red Tail Reborn" about the Red Tail Project P-51C. They showed a grainy aerial shot of the Montana State campus in Bozeman featuring the Mustang parked outside the Engineering Department, with a B-17 parked nearby. The University sold the Mustang in 1965. Anybody know the identity and ultimate fate of the Fort? I assume like many "war memorial" aircraft she was probably scrapped in the 50s or 60s.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

The Flying Fortress at Montana State College was B-17F 42-3470. It was there from 1945 until approx. 1953. It was then sold as a civilian aircraft.

As HK-580 this aircraft crashed somewhere in Colombia in 1962.
