The NMUSAF has made great strides in the last 2 decades to get a/c inside on display. I remember when it was not always that way. This new building is needed and will be a great addition to the museum. If recent past history is any guide, they will raise the money.

I am sure if anyone on WIX wants to help get more a/c inside on display and help relocate the Presidential a/c collection to a more accessible location, they know where to send the $$.

The new building will get the remaining aircraft indoors, and empty out the current presidential hangar to house the reconstruction of the C-99.

That's gonna be a massive project. Most, if not all the magnesium skins will have to be replaced. I was told they'll use aluminum, since the magnesium is no longer available. There's a tenuous authenticity connection, since the repair manuals say that aluminum can be used for skin repairs.

Any idea when ground breaking on the 4th hangar is to be?

The "2020" museum model I saw at the NMUSAF showed an additional "5th" hangar IIRC.

What about the experimental aircraft? Will they be coming over anytime soon?

With 25 million dollars to raise, how can they break ground in the spring?

I think that the experimental are due to come over at the same time, I think the drawing is just a drawing.

Chris, In the PDF link I provided it mentions the new building will be for space artifacts, large trasnport planes and the presidential aircraft. Do you know something about the x-planes that we dont?

Well one of the planes they are counting into the collection is a C-5 that we don't have yet. Most of the X-planes will fit there until their building goes up. As for funding, the museum has most of it, not all of it though.

Hey Mustangdriver,

That's really great to hear that the NMUSAF museum already has most of the funding it is needing for the construction. I really like hearing about museums getting the funding they need, especially with these economic conditions we seem to be feeling.

my museum is just starting what is going to be a fairly up-hill battle to raise $2.5 million for our new hangar, and that's if construction costs don't keep going up (as if... haha!!!).

I gotta make my way out there someday to see it. It looks like quite the nice little mom and pop museum. J/k... but it looks like a fantastic museum.

Cheers,

David

From the looks of it they are planing on adding an Orbiter to the collection. That's going to add $40+ million to the cost of filling the interior, iirc ;)

Also, there's room for a C-5 ... but I wonder if they are leaving enough unused floorspace in the plan for when SAM 28000 and SAM 29000 retire. I imagine NMUSAF will definitely be adding one of those (28000, I'd imagine) to the collection.

Spent last Sunday morning at the NMUSAF taking photos of displays for ideas since our museum (the Waco Museum in Troy, Ohio) just received a $531,000 grant from the State of Ohio just this past Thursday to build a second hangar and pave the parking lot plus make some improvements in the existing museum building. Construction will start in mid-March with completion slated for August. I was also named the Curator of the Museum on Friday during the Press Conference.

Chris,

What do you know about the NMUSAF's efforts to get a shuttle? With only two available for assignment, is NMUSAF's assignment definite or is that just a hope? Just wondering...
