Who are a few people you would say are "the" experts on the entire airwar of World War Two? Much like John Keegan is to the entire war, or Shelby Foote is to the civil war. Walter J. Boyne? Scutts? Roger Freeman?

Eric M. Hammel is one of the lesser-known authors in terms of "rock star" status, but he is a true scholar. His books cover the spectrum of military topics, but his "Aces Speak" series of books is simply excellent - very highly recommended:

What do you want to know for?

Most writers, historians and academics I'm aware of who specialise on W.W.II would not regard themselves as overall experts on W.W.II, but on particular aspects of the war. Anyone serious about being able to write or publish on the topic needs to have a solid background in the who/what/where/when of it all, but would be reluctant to see themselves as expert on the whole war.

And you need to decide wither you want a non-partisan non-national viewpoint, or accept that most are going to look at it from one standpoint.

Boyne is an excellent writer, and very good, IMHO technologically, and Freeman was generally held to be No.1 on the mighty eighth; but neither would be much chop if you removed the US knowledge and viewpoint - and asked for 'the rest' - although Boyne would still have lots to offer.

We still have very little quality writing and knowledge in English of the Eastern Front and Great Patriotic War, or the Japanese adventures in China - both major aspects of the world war.

Just a few thoughts.
