B-18's and B-17's at March Field circa 1940

I'm amzed at some of the jewels that I stumble across by following unlikely links at Google Life images.These were under "Planes at March Field" with no other info except that the photographer was Peter Stackpole.I tried to lighten up the formation flight picture of the B-18's using Photo Shop,but it didn't work too well.Maybe someone has a better verion than mine.I did reverse the image in one picture assuming that they didn't paint the letter "B' on the B-18 nose backwards.

The second image of the B-17 makes it look like the plane is actually a small scale model. Obviously it's real, but it kind of looks like a staged set put together by a model builder.

Great pictures though! Thanks for finding and sharing them.

I think those are B-17B's.

I love the line up of B-18A's.!

A B-17B converted to a B-17B1/2 with the flat waist windows???

Those are indeed B-17Bs that have had the flat waist installations added. Notice they still have the original style dorsal position. Compare the top and bottom Fortress photos with ship 34 in the middle picture. Looks like the weiner dog wants to go for a hop in the first one!
