That's pretty cool of those former Vought employees to do that. It's a nice restoration, except for the paint job (of course). I can live with all of the paint scheme except for one MAJOR glaring error - the Japanese kill markings combined with post W.W.II insignia. Totally, 100% inaccurate. The rest of the paint scheme I can live with.

I don't think the Navy will take that back for two reasons:

1) The plane was bought privately with a non-profit entity totally separate from the Navy.

2) The NHC has new leadership now and I've heard they are "turning a new leaf" in regards to warbird claims, recoveries, etc. It would really surprise me to find the new NHC leadership go after that airframe.

Awesome, beautiful restoration though! :D

I figured the Navy was waiting to see if they would restore it to flight status THEN claim it as theirs! :wink:

I would be very unhappy if they tried. Been hearing for a while that it will go to the FoF museum.

I cannot remember the other one's they (the retiree's) are working on except for the flying pancake, V-173, I think.

What is amazing is that the NHC is trying to turn a new leaf, but rather than supporting them, others would just assume bash them. Then in the same breath can't figure out why they don't get any help from them.

If the Navy did say "it's mine", how low is that? It would be like somedody breaking into people's houses and claiming a piece of furniture is theirs. It's intrusive as heck, and sort of postal and criminal at the same time.

The OLD Naval Historical Center and company (Pensacola) have cost many folk lots of funding trying to fight the government in court to keep --what is described above as-- obtained "privately with a non-profit entity..."

But they CAN, and they COULD, and they HAVE, and knowing the Navy, they prolly WILL. So there you go. Among people interested in saving old warbirds, it will always be an issue until the Navy establishes a meaningful, sensible and purposeful set of rules concerning its abandoned aircraft.

The man who got me into warbirds was Navy. There will always be a place in my heart for the Navy. But I will always also loathe the Navy with its prejudice, vanity, pomposity, and idiot ways. You know the old saw: the right way, the wrong way, and the Navy way. When they make their way so painful and meaningless, one can understand why sometimes people are driven to do things the wrong way in retribution. :?

That Regulus and the F6U Pirate were once part of the New England Air Museums collection. I believe the Pirate is sceduled for eventual display at the Navy Museum.
Regulus is one of the few left with landing gear.
Good bunch of guys down there at Vought.

Hey Mustang,If one of the devastators was recovered how long do you think it would be before the gubmint came knocking and wanting/TAKING the aircraft?I would wager not long.
