B-29 Parts ID help

Thu Jan 08, 2009 8:02 pm

These parts are from my uncle's B-29 that was with the 497th Bomb Group from Saipan. It was shot down 27 Jan '45. They are currently in Japan, and I was emailed these pics. Not sure what the parts are, so I'd like help IDing them. Thanks for any help.

BTW, does any one have contact information for the 73rd Bomb Wing Association. I'd like to join as a legacy member.

I don't know what the first pic is of, but the second is showing a Gosport tube! I doubt they had tat on boardthe B-29, unless they had a primary student and instructor aboard!

Also looks like a section of wing rib & an impeller of some sort and small axle shaft, such as for a roller of some kind.

What Robbie said, a section of a wing rib. If it is off of a B-29, I would say it from a WAG and distant recollections it most resembles Wing Station 831 near the very tip of the wing, though a definitive analysis through measurment, metalurgy tests, and comparision to drawings would be in order to know for sure.

 Then again it could be a part of Amelia's Lockheed... or it least TIGHAR will think so.

Thanks all, but I have been speaking with the gentelman in japan who has the parts. He was 16 when my uncle's B-29 wreckage crashed in his back yard. So it is off a B-29. Thanks for the info guys.

If you don't mind, what was your uncle's airplane's number? 42-XXXXX?
44-XXXXX? Post of picture of it if you have it!

The lack of curvature of the flange indicates it is from the lower side of the wing. The small flange depth of both the skin flange and the lightening cutouts is consistent with the area noted.

The inspection tags shown in the photo are typically only attached to a section for acceptance, not an individual part. This would make sense in that the last 30 inches of wing (rounded tip) was probably it's own subcontract.

By the way, is anything on the inspection tag legible? I can make out "Inspected" and "Date", but was wondering if there is a part number stamped above it, also the date, and what the inspection stamp looked like.

The first image of the pan looking item most likely is a piece of B-29 aluminum that was most likely fashioned into a cooking utensil. It was not very uncommon for civilians to fashion tools and other items from leftover wreckage scrap. Especially good American Aluminum! And judging by the discoloration on the bottom of it, that thing made a few noodles in its time!

The second shot, well, unless there is someone here who is really intimate with every little bit of the B-29, I will just say that most likely it is all B-29.

Thanks for sharing! Cool stuff.

The serial number is 42-63423 "WERE WOLF". There are pics attached showing the close ups, one with a part serial number, as well as the nose art. I don't have a pic of the entire B-29. My relative was the Navigator, 1LT Robert Frazier. Im going down to Washington DC on the 27th to lay flowers at his grave in Arlington, and go to the Air & Space museum.

The rib fragment is from a RH wing tip assy, the "ring" could be from any number of components-would need a P/N to say definitively. The "shaft" vaguely resembles a sprocket assy from an ammo booster, but I don't believe that's what it's from. The rest of the stuff I can't say for sure, but I can't imagine they'd have an old Gosport tube onboard?
