Go on Fox news and see the article about the new flying car. It's called a Terrafugia, it is as ugly as it sounds. It goes 90 mph on the road, 115 in the air and costs $200,000. The good thing is that it does the conversion itself automatically. Who knows, some guy made millions selling rubber shoes with holes in them.

The Terrafugia might actually turn out to be something more than a sideshow circus act. Most if not all of the people involved are MIT graduates and are SMART, SMART folks. I've met some of them during AirVenture.

If you truly want a roadable aircraft, you can get one right now from Larry Neal, designer of the Super Sky Cycle gyroplane. The SSC is a street legal motorcycle and an extremely well designed autogyro. Check it out here:

Taylor,
read the FARs, you are not required to operate off a airport, but you do so at your own risk.

AS they say, 'if it looks right, it is right' that thing looks like a pinstriped toad-are they going to race it in IMSA P-2 this year @ Daytona?
For $200 very large??

I wouldn't want to risk a decent airplane on the road with some of the crazies, cell phone distracted drivers, and uninsured motorists out there.

I don't know, but I think that Texas has some codes about aircraft NOT operating off of highways and such... Would be interesting to find out about other state's laws.

It is not a matter of the engineering. Molt Taylor produced a handful of flying cars fully certificated as cars and planes 50 years ago. What Taylor and the Terrafugia guys don't understand is the psychology of pilots. When I get back into flying I want to fly a plane not a car. I take to the air to get away from all my cares and woes on the ground. Why would I want to take my ground vehicle into the air when I want to escape what is on the ground?
