You have got to be kidding. They are awesome!!!!! :D I particularly like 'The Little Gramper.' Thanks for posting all these pics. Amazing. As for the B-17 being used as an assembly ship, I have never heard of this. Anyone know if they were?

At least one B-17 was painted with stripes as an assembly ship. I may have a pic..I'll have to dig through my references when I get home.

They remind me of the Gold Chain crowd! Plenty of color but no guns!

You know what I mean

Dare I say, "Gary's not going to like this!"

Actually, I like them very much. And believe it or not, I tossed around the idea of painting our B-24 like an Assembly Ship until I thought that the original configuration of Ol' 927 was more appropriate.

Maybe if it was painted up like Pete the Pom Inspector, the ol' girl would get a bit more respect, at least in the short term. ;)

Check this out, in the CBI. I don't know for sure if it is an assembly ship or not, but it's pretty neat!

Patches II, I like!
I'll have to go web diving for the B-17 convertible squadron hack. Know I saw it sometime back and bookmarked it. Lost it in an update. It doesn't have interesting paint but with the crew cabin chopped off and fared over except for the open air cockpit, I thought it interesting!

Somewhere in England!

The only open cockpit B-17s that I've ever heard of were the BQ-7 conversions for Operation Aphrodite.

They called the open top airplane "The Roadster" and used it as a chase/control plane during Aphrodite. It had been "Gremlin Gus II" with the 388th B.G. prior to assignment to the remote control operation.

Are you certain the CQ-4 controllers were open? Everthing I've seen indicates the BQ-7 was open to simplify bailout and the CQ-4 controllers were standard B-17s with remote controls added.
