More good stuff Andy, keep it coming. Speaking of Waco cabins.... check out the newest issue of CW with the feature on the only surviving UOC. I grabbed my notebook and looked it up before I even read down to the explanation! It's being restored to fly too.

Sweet machines!

I flew formation on a Cabin Waco, a VKS-7, CF-LWL, last summer. It was being donated to the Canadian Aviation Museum at Rockcliffe, in Ottawa. The previous owner was Dr. John Tener.

It was fun. I don't have any photos, but we were a 3-ship formation, The Cabin leading, me in the Taperwing, and Greg Reynolds in a UPF-7 on the wing.

We flew over the Parliament Buildings, (or near them, actually, since that is prohibited airspace), and did a bit of a tour before landing.

Someone must have photos somewhere, but I was too busy staying in position.

A rare sight in Canada!

I'd like to see photos of the YKS. Is the UPF-7 CF-LEP, the black/orange one?

Sorry, I can't seem to find any photos of the YKS. The UPF-7 was indeed CF-LEP.

I only have a couple...an SRE and a VKS-7F....pretty dull painted olive drab with grey undersurfaces.

I was just curious as to the extent of militarizing: colors, markings, stenciling, interior mods?
Many years ago I was familiar with a YQC belonging to Robert Fargo in NH which had been impressed and he said the interior was quite basic for a Cabin Waco.
Was this a result of US Army needs or was there an interior supplied for more utility uses?

Since all the Wacos were impressed into service, my guess is they all had real nice interiors...like riding in a Cadillac or a Packard. Most were used as executive transports, i.e. Base Commanders, Generals, etc. That is why they impressed the fast Cabins. However, some could be quite utilitarian such as the C-6 models, which Bob Fargo owns. By removing the rear seat you could carry a bunch of stuff. Kinda like having a van with the removeable rear seats. I would guess that at that point, the nicely upholstered leather seats with fine broadcloth or mohair interiors got torn up and were replaced with O.D. canvas. Another interesting item is that virtually none of these airplanes that survived came back to the original owners nor did they retain their pre-WWII registrations numbers. Bob's YQC-6 was like that. He didn't get the original number NC16586 back until after he had restored the airplane and had it flying.

Thanks for the info and explanation. Although over 35 years has past since seeing Bob, his family friendly FBO (Fargo Air Service) in Nashua, NH was one of the most pleasant memories of simplier flying days.

NC2334 EGC-8 belonged to the guy who tought me to fly. He also owned a Taperwing (as I am sure wacoykc knows). I spent many great hours in 2443 before it was sold and delivered to Cable Airport in California. It sat unflown for many years after the day it was delivered, and to the best of my limited knowledge it still sits forgotten in that same hanger. Any updates out there?

ERIC.....the Taperwing you speak of sits about 30 feet from my Cabin and is owned by Alan Hoeweiler and his partner Mike Brown (who happens to be my brother's father-in-law). It probably doesn't fly 10 hours a year and is for sale. The EGC-8 you speak of was owned by Burnham Nelson who also owned a VKS-7F Cabin, which also just sat in a hangar. From what I understand, Mr. Nelson has passed on. It would be worth you checking this out to find out what the deal is regarding both of these Wacos. The last address of Mr. Nelson was either in NC or SC. He was a member of the NWC until about 3-4 years ago and then all correspondance stopped.

I was aware of 719Es location, thats why I put the (coment to you) above. Pat her on the nose for me will ya? Do you know her asking price? She was the first interesting airplane that I ever soloed (at 72 hours tt) and she did not have duel controls. A friend of mine is looking into the EGC-8 next weekend, thanks for the update.
