Need help with some old warbird 35mm slides

Can any of you WIXers recommend some hardware for converting old 35mm slides and negatives into digital images? I found some boxes of aviation images from the 70s and 80s that I would like to convert into a digital format. There are some interesting images from the late 1970s that I took at Reverend Burchinal's place in Paris, Texas. The three bladed P-51 "In God We Trust" is there as well as some good shots of the B-17. Any suggestions would be welcomed. HP? Kodak? Sony? Thanks,

You'll need a dedicated slide scanner (obviously

) but make sure that it has both Digital ICE and Digital GEM included with it. Digital ICE gets rid of dust and scratches, automatically... and that is a MUST. Digital GEM corrects for color fading, also very useful. Nikon, Minolta, and Epson make good scanners. It just depends upon how much you'd like to spend. However, you are wasting your money if you don't get one with ICE and GEM. You can probably pick up a decent used one on e-bay for a good price these days, as so few people need film scanners any more. If you need more help though, please let me know.

Albert...I have a scanner that will do 16 slides at a time...HP G4050.

It does a pretty good job with slides and negatives of all sizes.

HP also makes ones that will scan 4 at a time and cost a bit less. I had an Epson that would do 4 but the HP does a much better job.

Color Slide from the HP G4050...it's a bit clearer in person...there is some compression through photobucket

Look around for video stores that convert film to dvd's as I have a store in town that does great work and will convert just about anything and everything.... :wink:

I use a Microtek i800 for scanning my collection and can't recommend highly enough. It has digital ICE etc. it also scans up to 9600dpi if you want to blow your pics up to a size that would fit on the side of a barn. :wink:

It comes with a slide adaptor (holds 12 slides), 35mm negative film strip holder, a 4"x5" film holder and a 6 x 22mm film holder.

The pics below both came from 35mm negatives at approx 300dpi .........
Black and white.

Colour.

12,500 scans since April '08 and no hiccups.

I just got an HP G4050 from amazon.com for $139 delivered, so I'm sure there are a lot of better ones out there, and I've only just started playing with it, but it does seem to do a nice enough job on old family slides, and 16 at a time. It does have a dust and scratch removal option, which seems to make scans take a lot longer.

Eagle- I am also in the market for a scanner and have been looking at the 4050- Are you running Vista or XP. The only reason I haven't bought yet is that I have heard horror stories about making these work with Vista which I now have. HP currently does not have any of their scanners (at least the ones I have been able to find research on) listed as Vista compatible.

I have XP, am not a computer person, but put in the install disc and was scanning not long afterwards. Haven't tried all the various bells and whistles though, but have scanned .pdf files which came out well.

For Jerry, Cole found that this was the easiest way to mount the one-piece top wing on the Fokker D.VII

Thanks to all that have posted! I really appreciate the help. The local big box retailers around here have been useless as far as recommendations go. They have some of the hardware listed in this thread but none of the staff can tell me anything about them. Sometimes "big" electronics stores do not provide ""big service or knowledge. That D-VII was my favorite! I'll never forget how it flew when Dave Fox was at the helm!
