Pate Museum F-101 Vodoo

Wed Dec 31, 2008 7:57 pm

I was on my way back from Granbury Texas, when I noticed that the F-101 was missing. Has anybody heard what has happened to this plane, and where it went? 8)

I live right next door to the Pate Museum... and one of my neighbors father is the head of the NMUSAF... came down one Christmas and didn't like the way Pate was taking care of it's charges... when pate refused to improve... the NMUSAF took the airplanes away.... the F-4 went to an east texas museum and I think the 101 did as well... the really big ones left (119 and HU-16) are up for grabs.... interested?

101 wasn't under the purview of NMUSAF. It was donated by the RCAF.

PATE aircraft

I am Vice-President and Director of Aircraft Maintenance of the Historic Aviation Memorial Museum in Tyler, TX, located at 150 Airport Drive.

We obtained the F-4, T-33, and F-105, from Pate. We repainted both the F-4 and T-33. Paint is not holding up on the F-4, so it may be stripped and repainted again in the future. F-105 was partially repainted after the Air Force Museum removed the radio-active panels, and we replaced them.

We do not have the F-101. It was ours for the taking, but we didn't have the money to move it. I don't know where it went.

By the way, the F-101 was under the control of the US Air Force, not Canadians. If there is a question, ask Mark Miller, who is now in charge at the Museum. He replaced Tom Brewer last year. He is the one who offered the aircraft to us at HAMM.

Yeah as i recall, the Voodoo is actually owned by the USAFM it was repainted in RCAF colors. I tried to get the ball rolling for the Texas Military Forces Museum to obtain it but no such luck. I just hope it went to Museum that wants to take care of it.

Gee...this all seems kinda fishy to me. The F-101 was an ex-RCAF plane but the USAFM took it over? :? :?: Doesn't seem right to take it away from you.

The Voodoo in question was never a part of the RCAF, the USAFM painted her to represent the RCAF, she was ex ANG.

ok thanks :)

Whoa, I was there right after she was repainted, this was over 20 years ago and the Pate people told me that they just repainted the markings that were on it. They also told me that the aircraft in question was gifted by Canada. Has something been lost over the years? 2nd part is that I've never heard or seen of the NMUSAF say that they wanted any of their loaned US aircraft painted in anything other than US colors.

I believe it was an museum exchange between the RCAF and the USAFM :?:

Sooooo why would the USAFM want a USAF F-101 painted in RCAF markings? I am guessing at the time there where already a boat load of surviving ex-RCAF F-101s around that the USAFM could have? :?:

All of the National Guard 101s came out of service around 1984. The 147th at EFD-Houston turned theirs in in the 84-85 timeframe. I saw the Canadian marked F101 at Pate shortly after that. There were Canadian F-101s flying long after that.

The Pate...maybe former Pate CF-101... was indeed ex-RCAF (17471), but it was returned to the USAF in 1971. The Canadians had two batches of Voodoos and traded the remainder of the first batch for the second batch in Operation Peace Wings. The first batch had IFR probes and the USAF wanted them for the RF-101 progrom. Some were converted to RF-101Bs, but not all. I have no idea what happened to 17471 once it was returned to the U.S., but it certainly is part of the NMUSAF and it WAS NOT donated by the RCAF as the RCAF ceased to exist in 1968. There are a few of the ex-RCAF early batch CF-101s kicking around the U.S. including 17400 at the VAC Museum, and 17483 in Reno at the ANG base.

Thanks for the clarification, Jim. I put it down as RCAF so as not confuse it with the ORIGINAL CAF ! :D
