B-25D of the 38th BG continues it's attack, after being hit by flak, and sinks a Japanese tramp steamer of New Britian in 1943.

But an AAF bomb can.

That B-25 was blown in half an instant after that photo was taken. The airplane was destroyed by the detonating bombs of the preceding B-25 that took the photo.

Jack's photo and another photo of the tail-less B-25 heading toward the water in an inverted bank can be found on page 47 of
"SHOT TO HE LL The Stories and Photos of Ravaged World War II Warbirds" (by Cory Graff). The tail section and the starboard outer wing panel can clearly be seen flippping through the air some distance behind the doomed airplane. The photo(s) was taken at Hansa Bay on 28 August 1943. Unfortunately, my scanner has been down for some time.

WOW!
Just proves that you can't always trust a caption.
BTW if you haven't read Jock Henebry's book I suggest you do!

X2 - Great book, and mine is signed. :D

Does anyone know if Chuck Howe and Dick Ellis of the 3rd Attack Group are still living?
