According to the pilot during the approach to land the airplane touched down about 500 feet down runway 23 on the centerline. ............Winds at the time of the accident were 100-degrees gusting to 15 knots.
The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this incident as follows:
The pilot's inadequate compensation for wind conditions that resulted in his failure to maintain directional control during landing roll. A factor was gusting tailwinds.

Do I read this right? He was landing on runway 23 and the winds were from 100? What was the base wind strength? Was there a problem in the transcription?

So far rather than argue if there is a problem, others would just rather slam Yeager. Interesting.

That's what he's best at

Actually, I don't think is the place to argue whether there is a problem. I can tell you that the issue surrounding safety and operations is constantly being discussed in the proper environment...which is not a warbird message board or an editorial to Flight Journal, or for that matter Warbird Digest. It is best worked out among peers in either formal or informal gatherings

Furthermore, the person who wrote the article's credibility is now pretty small since he has pretty much alienated himself from the warbird operator community by HIS actions. Notice, that he wasn't saying anything about the safety of warbird oeprators and their aircraft when he was actually enaged and flying some of the airplanes owned by the very folks he is now bashing.

Some of us take this pretty seriously. It is our livelihood. When a bitter man starts spouting in a public way without trying to help solve the problem from within, we are going to get defensive.

I personally don't care whether he or Welch broke the soundbarrier first. It has nothing to do with this subject. But it appears that you are the one who wants to deflect the actual subject of the thread. If you knew half of what went on in the warbird community with CY, you would probably have a completely different opinion.

I am affraid the average reader will look at warbirds differently now due to the comments. I took it seriously cause it was bashing the warbird movement from a VERY famous pilot. Not good. :?

How come? Why is it O.K. to bash the national museums and anything that they do O.K on an open forum, but talk about the same stuff with flying warbirds, and it becomes a huge issue, and one that needs to be hushed up. What is good for one is good for another. This goes beyond just warbirds. Even beyond aircraft. We have all had that friend that owned a car that was way too much for him to handle and he ends up wrecking it.

No, i just find it disrespectful to try and take away or lessen ones accomplishments because of your feelings for the person. I have seen it done time and time again here. I know a pretty good bit about what went on in the warbird circuit. If half of most people's dirty laundry got posted here no one would like eachother.

So its OK for your hero to slam others for tearing up warbirds. But its not OK to mention his damage to warbirds. And NF-104's. And RB-57's...

To mention it is jsut stating the facts, and there is nothing wrong with that. To live for anytime you can bash the man, is not cool. As for the NF-104's and RB-57's adn other aircraft he destroyed while testing, that can be summed up in one comment. When the FAA was trying to ground Bob Hoover they said he crashed more aircraft than anyone else. He said, " I am a test pilot, I that is what I do. I crash them there, so the pilot out on theline doesn't."
