The original DC-8 illustrations depict a 38 seat XB-42 looking airframe using twin buried ALLISONS
The 1966 DC-10 original proposal was for a 4 engined, double decked, 550 seat airliner, but airport operators freaked at the possibilities of have two or three arriving at the same time and how they would deal with 1500 passengers
The last commercial proposal from Mac/D the MD-12 was for a twin decked, 550 seat, four engined airliner
So here we are, under the sun, found anything new?

OH, YEAH- the original DC-9 jet design was based on two wing mounted engines and conventional horizontal surfaces, and an early 737 design used two aft mounted engines and horizontals mounted just above the side mounted engines
