Man those birds had been derelict for a while when those were taken. What or where is 'Olathe'? They also are both marked with a big 'K'. Mean anything to anyone. (this is WIX-someone out there knows.)

Maybe Bob Bean at Blythe Calif?
Rich

????

I believe Rich is correct. BTW Olathe is in Kansas. Large Navy training and reserve base was located there.

BuNo 97286 with Kermit Weeks

Olathe is my hometown - suburb of Kansas City - 20 miles south of downtown KC. The Olathe Navel Air Station (actually located in Gardner, KS) opened, I think, in 1942, and closed in 1970. Trained pilots during world war two then was a reserve unit base, or something like that. It trained the likes of John Glen and Bob Barker. There was a restored F4U that was a Korean War vet that at one time was based at ONS flying the war bird circuit a few years back. It crashed and was destroyed. Don't know if it was one of these pics you have.

Saw 4 or 5 F4Us at Blythe in 1970, wish I had had a camera then

If I recall, Joe Tobul's F4U-4 was a Korean War vet, later at NAS Olathe. If that's the case, neither pictured Corsair are his.

97286 is the Corsair I used to crew some for the late Merle Gustafson, "Angle Of Okinawa". The airplane is now owned by Kermit Weeks. IIRC the airplane did serve in Korea onboard CV-21 USS Boxer. I do not remember
which squadron.
