Oh, and those grooves are only on that side of the piston. The other side is clean as a whistle.

Interesting stuff. Yes keep posting more like these, Gary.
(and I'm not just saying this because I won a pony!)

Come on, the curiosity's starting to kill me, hope we get to find out the deal with that piston before the thread dies.

... and keep it up with the quizzes, it's fun.

Ooops.......well, this is one if those things I'm not totally sure of the answer on. I was told the piston was from a Franklin engine, but I really don't know the exact reason for the grooves on one side. I've never seen another piston like that.

I'll try to make it more clear in the future quizzes if I actually know what I'm asking about or not. Sorry. :-)

Don't suppose it may be from a helicopter engine?

I've worked on several Franklins but never a Vertical engine so that sounds like a candidate. Maybe groves down to help in lubrication?

Hmmm, helicopter pistons sounds reasonable. Odd that the grooves would only be on one side though. Either way, thanks for the help on that one. Let's keep looking into it though. :-)

In the meantime, here's another quiz picture for you. The only hint here is that Rick H isn't allowed to participate in this one. ;-)

Exhaust nozzle on the F-14 or some other afterburning engine. The color gives it away along with the spot welding.

Yes on the afterburner, no on the aircraft type. But I don't know if it's fair to keep y'all hanging too long with that detail, so here's the entire picture. I'll let y'all guess a little longer on this one and then put the next quiz picture up...

Looks like we've got a spare F-111 can. :)

So, when are the engine runs so I can come out and be your cockpit rat?

Nope on the F-111.

It's for an F-4 Phantom, or so Rick H tells me. It now belongs to the Collings Foundation and is merely being stored at Austin Acres until they can come pick it up.

Here's the next quiz item. I'll be surprised if y'all don't get this one in a matter of minutes.........

Hey Gary - check this out - need a prop for that newly found (and identified) Aeronca E-113 for only $31.00? Read on.

The following is page 8 of the 1937 ORT (Karl Ort) Aeronautical Supplies catalog/brochure from my collections. I'm working on updating my aviation history web site and this catalog will one of many new items, as time allows. So I guess this is a bit of a tease! Hope you enjoy.

I really like the quote in the first paragraph, "Ole knows his propellers and don't you think he don't"! The image is a bit large but I wanted the text to be readable. Note that you can get a brand new prop for your 150, 180 or even 300 hp Hispano-Suiza for only $56.00...in 1937, remember! More later.

Close enough. ;-)..........

This is a rather sad looking Griffon that I recently obtained. I'm hoping to someday at least make it presentable and perhaps turn it into my dining room table.
