I stopped by Dyess on my way to Big Spring from South Carolina.

I found the B-66 that has been relegated to the weeds. It needs a paint job but truthfully it's in better shape than some of the other planes that are on display. Some of them are starting to look pretty rough.

I also managed to get a picture of the T-33 over by the fire training facility.

I'll start with the F-4 that is on display off base at Dyess Elementary school.

Then move on to the base.

Then the mystery T-33.

Finally, just because it was on my way, the T-33 in the park in Sweetwater.

That's for posting Brad. Back in 2003, I was allowed on base to check out the display. I had 600 photos from there, CAF HQ and Pima got lost when the computer crashed. Really ticked me off more than using my neice's wedding pics. :o

Thanks, great pics. They have quite a collection there, but the weather is taking its toll!

If any one is interested I have other photos of the aircraft on display in earlier markings than currently worn.

The B-17 and B-52 back in the late 70's, very early 80's. Somewhere we have pictures of the wingless B-17 being flown to Dyess from the Abilene airport, suspended under a helicopter!

P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.

S: Took hammer away from midget.

Are these accessible to the public, or are they on base and AF personnel only? Not that I'm anywhere close to Texas, but just in case :D

Thanks for posting the pictures Brad.
I had an interesting experience at Dyess when it was a SAC base and I was flying explosives around the country in a Twin Beech.I had to stop for fuel at about 2 am one night in 1978.There was some sort of construction going on where they usually parked us,so Trans Alert had us park next to the last B-52 on the Alert Ramp. Then the Trans Alert guys drove off to find a fire extinguisher and order an avgas truck for us.When I got out of the airplane to get on the wing to prepare to fuel,a kid who looked to be about 13 years old,but who was an security guy from the air police told me that I was in a restricted area and couldn't leave the airplane.

I asked how I was supposed to fuel the airplane without going outside. He just said that his orders that nobody could leave a transient airplane in his restricted area.I decided not to argue as he had an M-16 with a clip in it.The situation was defused a few minutes later when Trans Alert returned. After a bit of discussion,it was finally decided that we had to move out of the restricted area, but we weren't allowed to start the engines. This dilemma was resolved when one of the Trans Alert guys moved two or three orange traffic pylons that indicated the limits of the Alert Ramp from one side of my airplane to the other. We were then magically no longer in a restricted area.I never enjoyed going into SAC bases.

Do all AFB's have open houses?

Also, it seems a little odd to have all these, some of which are fairly rare-ish, and to have them property of the NMUSAF, but they're basically for military personnel's viewing only. I understand why but given the budget constraints it doesn't make a whole lot of sense....
