I recall reading a story about a pair of F-86's getting jumped by some newer model fighters back in the 80's. I remember that the Sabres won the "fight", it was somewhere in a training area in the South West.

Anybody remember it or have a link to the story somewhere?

I had heard a similar story of some A-10's down in the dirt suckering some "Fast Movers" down to play with them and surprising a couple of them! Got to be some good stories out there. You can even keep your name anonymous if you were there and came out on the short end of things! We won't tell anyone!

Aviation History from the early 90's ?? i sorta remember this article, something about some f-4s being jumped (in a friendly manner) by Australian flown F-86's. if i remember the story correctly the f-4s took quite a while to gain the upper hand and lost (not jettisoned) drop tanks while manuevering. i have this magazine in my collection but i do not have any real organization system to find it without blind luck.

Sabre Jet Classics Magazine. I have that issue, I guess the F-4s and Aussie Sabres used to mix it up in Vietnam some. The Aussie Sabre had similar characteristics as the MiG-17. The Sabres gave them a heck of fight.

But it's not the one I remember reading.

if I remember right, it was Skip Holm, he was flying a F-4, heading into Clark, and he decieded to play with some F-86s. By the time it was over, the F-86s had taught them a few things, and the F-4s had lost thier TDY pods.

The Aussie 79th Squadron had F-86's at Ubon when I did my tour there in 1967. We had four squadrons of F-4's in the 8th Tac Ftr Wg and our boss, Robin Olds, frequently talked about challenging the F-86's, but, never did.
