I've got a shot of the original around somewhere. It's a P-51A
flown by Major Bob Petit OPS officer of the fighter Section of the 1st ACG.
Even though POF says it's in Col Cochrane's marking it isn't.
BTW Petit's first "Miss Virginia" was a P-38G #147 of the 339th FS and flown by Rex Barber to down Adm Yamamoto's Betty bomber.

The yellow front of the spinner should be NMF no paint.

so would that canopy arrangement be what the early P-51's had before the development of the Malcolm Hood?

One thing about Cochrane is that he rarely flew in any missions has he was deemed to valuable and had to much knowledge to risk capture. He's not flying his a/c but a 2Lt is. Mahony's 51A was marked the same but one less stripe but the fin cap was painted white.
BTW Betty White broke his heart by chosing Allen Ludden over him

Did a censor mask the gunsights and gunports in that vintage photo?

Thanks Tom. Looks like he was also a technical advisor on "Jet Pilot".

That's for sure! A marked improvement. The old scheme was quite dated.
