Look at the picture. (sorry if its too big) and could you tell me what is sitting in the side of the tarmac to the left of the photo? Is that a AT-6? A-24?

Sure looks like an A-24 to me. Shame we can't see the s/n on the tail... might be able to find a factory photo for you. Maybe Tulsa-built.

My money's on "not an AT-6" but as for what it really is.... I dunno.
I'll throw out that I think it might be of "Douglas" design, but again, that's just a guess.

It strikes me as a bit funny that the A-24 was redesignated to F-24 in 1948. It did not do too well as a ground attack A/C and I hardly can see it going up against a "real" fighter! or was the "F" at that time still for PHOTO?

On a second look, it definitely looks like an A-24, and yes I know its not a T6, but does the tail have a different shape?

The tail on your pic does look slightly different. I was struggling to figure out if that was the tail, or if there was some background detail that just made the tail look funny. It kinda looks like the tree in the foreground might have a branch that reaches out and changes the appearance of the aft part of the tail. Hard to tell with the quality of the photo (not your fault, just the way that it is.) The shape of the fuselage, the canopy construction, the gear and the tall piece sticking out above the cowl (what is that thing anyway) all point to A-24. The national insignia is even in the right place. Look at the photo I posted, cut out that A-24, and compare it to the one in your photo. With the exception of the tail, it's pretty dead-on I think.

Looks like a tent or something behind it giving the illusion of a different tail. Definitely an A24 or Marine SBD though.

That is an antenna mast. It was one mooring point for a wire antenna the other end would be on the horizontal stabilizer or even sometimes a small post on the rudder. Not many dipole antennas in those days.
