CONGRESSMAN KEN CALVERT TO REISSUE PURPLE HEART TO PLANES OF FAME AIR MUSEUM VOLUNTEER WILBUR RICHARDSON

WHO: Congressman Ken Calvert of the 44th District, Wilbur Richardson (former US Army Air Force B-17 gunner), Ed Maloney (Curator and Founder, Planes of Fame Air Museum)

WHAT: Monthly Flying Day programs feature WWII aviation history panel
discussion and flight demonstration

WHEN: November 1, 2008; 10:00am - 1:00 pm

WHERE: Planes of Fame Air Museum
7000 Merrill Avenue
Chino, CA 91710

WHY: Wilbur Richardson, a highly decorated WWII veteran, was awarded his Purple Heart in 1944 as a result of injuries sustained during his 30th bombing mission over Munich. In 2008, Wilbur's Purple Heart was stolen from a display case at the museum. A volunteer led effort brought Congressman Calvert's medal reissuance and presentation to our Flying Day program.

We were never able to confirm who stole the medal. At this point, we're all happy to put it behind us.

Probably some low-life who wanted to use it to pick up chicks in bars. Hopefully he'll get some awful, long-lasting STD for his trouble.

It's not the medal itself that really matters. It's the man.

The medal is just a piece of colored ribbon and metal.

So, while whomever stole it is certainly a dirtbag, Mr Richardson is still an awardee of the medal regardless of if he has the emblem and certificate in his posession.

The "re-presentation" is certainly a nice gesture, but not required by any means for him to have the status of an awardee.
