My guess is that it's a VMF-322 Corsair (c1954), seen while the squadron was based at NAS South Weymouth, MA...though that squadron should have been carrying the "Z" code on the vertical tail I believe. Sure looks like "VMF-322" on the fuselage though!

Odd to see an F4U-1D with the early braced canopy operating with the post-war insignia.

Hi Rob;
I don't think it's South Weymouth.
The construction of the blimp hanger is a little different that either of the two that were there.
Ii did a quick thumb trough of my Naval Airfield volumes and didn't seem to find one that fit the photo.
Could it be Akron?
Jerry

My guess is that the photo is taken at NAS Akron, OH. "L" was the base code letter for Akron and "F" indicated fighter..hence LF. Also if I look closely at the side view of the Corsair I believe I can see the red fuselage stripe under the insignia indicating a reserve A/C. VF-653 was one of the fighter sqdns at Akron.

I would say it's Akron. The other building in the photo matches the building at Akron that is on the west side of the Airdock.

You are a goldmine of Corsair pics, post them all!

That trees in the last pic reminds me of the Carolinas.

Mike

Aaah, is that the illusive FG-1 in the 2nd photo from the top? 8) Note the tail wheel doors with the deleted tail hook. Apparently these were produced specifically for land based squadrons and had no wing fold hydraulics installed either. Photos of this configuration are very hard to find.
