Hey Folks:

I'm headed out to the Oceania area in 3 1/2 weeks, and wondering where to go? Where is the best place for wrecked planes, and things like that? I'm trying for somewhere remote, and in the last thread was inquiring about dangers. This time tell me where you'd go. I've narrowed down the following places:

Morotai, The Marshalls, Kiribati (Gilberts), Yap, and The Marianas (Pagan and Guam). Let's hear where some of you would go..

Chris

If you go to Guam, be sure and visit Jeff's Pirate Cove. It's a good place to eat and drink. It's also close to where that Japanese soldier Yoki was captured in the early 70s.

Also, you might check into the Pacific War Museum on Route 4. As far as I know, It's still closed since the last typhoon. But it's worth a try.

I remember hearing about that in the orientation lecture the dependants got when we arrived there in 1974. I was 6 at the time but I remember that and the warning about strange pieces of metal sticking out of the ground. Right before we got there a family had been blown up when the father stuck the broken leg of a BBQ in a pipe coming out of the ground which turned out to be some sort of WWII ordnance.

I wish I had more pictures from my time there.

For a first trip, definitely Papua Diving resort in Iryan Jaya. See www.iriandiving.com

Withe sand beaches, cristal clear water, some of the best preserved coral reefs in the whole of Asia BUT also plenty of WWII wreck diving and a lot of former Japanese airfields close by.

BTW, the security threat disappeared. did it turned nasty ?
